A party of Puketapu natives amongst whom were Te Huia, Katatori, Raniera, and Parata came into Town and asked the Resident Magistrate for amount of balance in second payment for Bell Block in order that their opposition to the location of putatutanga, by Europeans, might be removed. Resident Magistrate said no authority had been received from you on the subject, therefore he supposed you would return shortly and arrange it with them. Overland Mail left for Wellington. Hone Ropiha came to Barracks and dictated a letter to you. The "Diana" Hopkins, 11 days from Nelson. On W. Baynter's complaint sent Hakopa to Waiwakaiho to tell the natives there to prevent thier cattle trespassing. To Ahoahi, the principal owner, was at Mimi, a small village north of Waitara. A party of Taranaki natives came into Town with wheat for sale. Posted letter to you. "Diana" sailed for Mokau. Sent Hakopa to Te Ahoaho who returned yesterday evening, he said his cattle should be looked after. By Dr. Wilson's direction I called on Mr. Young of the Henui, told him a complaint had been made about his placing three large stones in the Devon Road and requested him to cause the same to be removed - he told me in an excited manner to go about my business and if I had anythin to say to him I must do it in writing. "Lucy James" sailed for Wellington, passengers Mr. Hargreaves, Mr. Kemp, W. Morrison, Mrs. Kingdom, Jane Loveridge - cargo 341 bags flour, 16 kegs butter, 1 case, 2 casks, ditto, 14 bags maize meal, 155 kits maize, 17 sacks oats. Court Day. Reported Mr. Young's conduct to Resident Magistrate. Heale v. Allen, case, rent - judgment for plaintiff - debt and costs to be paid in 6 weeks. Clare v. Weston, alleged debt - dismissed. Reed v. Heale, case, damages for shooting a dog - judgment for plaintiff - 15/- with costs. A party of Hauranga and Kaihihi natives came into Town and complained to Cap. King of Mr. Cutfield's cattle running over their lands without intermission for the last five years, repeated complaints had been made, they now came forward for the last time and claimed £15 damages for each year amounting in the whole to £75. Captain King said he could not agree to the claim for the past and as the cattle were to be taken away the cause of complaint would soon cease - he thought they might be collected and driven away in three months - had he known in the first instance that he was subject to damages for trespasses on waste lands, the cattle never would have been placed on the block - in reply to the last sentence the natives said they told you, if the cattle crossed the boundary streams, they would catch and keep them until paid for the trespass and received your consent. Captain King said he would write to you on that subject - shortly after this the natives left, dissatisfied with the result of the meeting. 3 Hakopa left for the Hua. Overland Mail from Wellington. On a second complaint from Paynter against Te Ahoaho's cattle running over his wheat I went to Waiwakaiho. The natives were in the bush on the north of Waiwakaiho. 4 General muster. Attended at Police Offices. A public meeting took place at the "Seven Stars" to consider the question of applying to the Governor in Chief for a Charter incorporating New Plymouth - lost by a large majority. 5 Parade - "Lucy James" returned from sea having been caught in a South Easter. 6 The schooner "Rapid", Williams, 1 day from Nelson with Norfolks goods and English Mail. Received Maori Messengers. Reported to Resident Magistrate a case of card playing in the tap room of the "Seven Stars" public house and general late hours kept by all three public houses - Resident Magistrate sent for Mr. George, landlord of Seven Stars, warned him not to allow card playing and recommended him to observe better hours in future. Johnson unable to attend duty through lameness. 7 "Lucy James" sailed for Wellington. "Rapid" sailed for Wairau. Distributed Maori Messengers. Paora and Horima applied for and received a summons against Hori of Waitara for £3.10.6 cash lent to the late Pahiwera whose widow Hori has since married. Hakopa left for Waitara. Taitua called at Barracks. 8 A sbhooner seen off Waitara. 9 Paora v. Hori - present Resident Magistrate and two Native Assessors. Tahana and Honi Ropiha Utuhia - notwithstanding a heavy rain a considerable number of Natives were in attendance and seemed much interested in the investigation which lasted four hours when it was decided that defendant pay £3.10.6 payment to be deferred until sufficient of late Pahiwera's effect can be collected to pay the Amount. A public meeting was held at the Omata Inn, resolutions similar to those passed at the Meeting of 4th. inst. were adopted. 10 The schooner "Elizabeth" 40 tons, Davis, from Hokianga went to Waitara, passengers Mohi Tawai, several of his people and a few Taranaki natives, in the whole fifty. The "Diana" from sea - out 10 days and in distress - two shore men were put on board and took the vessel to Waitara to repair. Colonial Surgeon verbally reported. Private Johnson at present unfit for duty. A barque came up skirted the Town and owing to a heavy surf stood off for the day. 11 Hakopa left for Waitara to attend a Meeting of Wiremu Kingi and natives to talk over the case heard at the Resident Magistrate's Office on 9th. inst. General muster and drill. Attended at Police Office. A party of Kaihihi natives came to Town and returned without seeing Captain King. A party of Ngapuhi Natives from the "Elizabeth" came into Town. Police provided with Schedule forms for delivery to all house-holders. The barque "Simlah" 597 tons, Robertson - 8 days from Auckland with 45 passengers and goods for this place.
