Napier June 17th 1872 My dear McLean This afternoon I got rid of the Provincial Council after a very short and quick Session Buchanan was inclined once or twice to be troublesome but he subsided - I dont think he is an over safe fellow to trust - I told you about his request to be put in the Legislative Council - when I came from Wellington last time he came at once to know if it was to be done and I had to tell him the vacancies were limited. He said if that House were not open to him he shd. try and find his way to the other meaning of course that he wd. contest either your or my seat next election. Of course I said nothing - I am anxious to hear what your probable movements will be - I have telegraphed today to Gisborne telling him now the Council has closed I will either go to the Wellington by the Nevada or go about the end of the month. If the latter that I wd. stay for good for the Session but that if I go now by the Nevada I shall have to come back to set my Prov. work in order for the winter - If possible I shd. like to be here when you come down so let me know as soon as you can what your movements are likely to be - That wretch H.R. has been as active and vicious as ever lately I hear that he is doing something with your leases and mine - something about minors or married women whose husbands have not signed - There is both a married woman and a minor grantees in my Leases so that I daresay there is something in it - Kinross tells me there is a minor concerned in yours - A movement is getting up to turn H.R. out of the Club which ought to succeed - certainly the part he took in the Heretaunga business proves him to be a thorough blackguard and unfit to be associated with by Gentlemen - Fannin has just been in to tell me the result of the meeting that has been held tonight in the Odd-fellows Hall, it seems about 400 people were there and that H.Russell has been severely handled. Resolutions were passed petitioning the Governor to remove him from the L.Council and as a J. P. - The excitement among the natives was declared by Resolution to be his work and so on - the meeting was almost unanimous the only people who you will be surprised to hear took Russells part were Gussey and Major Carlyon who were both more or less tipsy - I daresay the mornings papers will have the resolutions as passed and if so I will send it; the Star leaves about ten o'clock tomorrow - I havent time for more Always Yours very sincerely J.D.Ormond
