New Plymouth August 31st. 1850 Sir, I beg to forward, in continuation, the Report for the fortnight ending this day:- Sunday Parade at 10 o'clock. William Richards complained against George Jordan for being drunk and disorderly. I posted a letter with enclosures to you, by the Wellington Overland post, of this day. Privates Johnson and Hakopa left for an inland section, in the Grey Block, to see Mr. B. Bishop, and got payment for a pair of stirrups lost by him when riding a horse, the property of a native. The money was paid. Force in Town. Met at Barracks. Parata returned from the South, and reported your return to Wellington; also the arrival of two English vessels at the Port. Court Day. Mrs. Richards v. G. Jordan. Case, assault; judgement - fined 5/- with costs, and for contempt of Court, locked up for 24 hours. The regaining case against him adjourned. Force in Town, engaged cleaning arms. General muster. Heale on duty at the Police Office. Absent - Newsham, Medland, Honi Ropiha, Rawiri. Three natives - Tare, Toroa, and Tahua came to Barracks about their Contract with Joseph Hawke. On enquiry, Hawke had left for Omata. Mr. Stephen Gillingham called with six Ngatiruanui natives about to enter into a Contract with him for work, the nature of which I fully esplained to them. Hori Karaka, from the Manakau, came here and complained about not being paid for 8 1/2 bushels wheat delivered to Mr. Seecombe. Arranged by payment in full. W. Bishop found drunk and disorderly, and locked up. Sunday Parade. Force in Town, on duty at intervals throughout the day. Private Johnson v. W. Bishop, Judgement, fined 5/- with costs. Shute v. G. Jordan - case, cattle wandering at large. Judgement, 6d. per head, with costs. I received a Summons against a Moturoa native named Piripi. Overland Mail from Wellington. I received a Gazette of 5th. August for you, and a letter from you. Johnson and Hakopa left for Waitaha to enquire into a trifling dispute between J. Wills and two Puketapu natives, subsequently arranged by the Police. Stewart on leave for the day. Overland Mail from Auckland. I received one Gazette for you. Two natives, E Hare and Raniera called about P. Elliot's cattle wandering on land the property of natives. I went to P. Elliot on the subject. He promised to make an arrangement with the natives, or remove them to his paddock. A native named Retimana called to recover 1/- from James Riddel, for putting him across the Waingangoro river, in the Ngatiruanui district. Overland Mail left for Auckland. Wiremu Kingi returned from Taranaki, and passed on to the Waitara. Several of the Police on duty in town during the presence of a party of Ngatiruanui natives, on a trading visit. General muster. Absent - Medland and Rawiri. Tamati te Ngahuru came into town. P. McDurmott complained of having been bitten by a dog belonging to a native at the Kawau. I went to that Pah. The owner of the dog was not there. Richard Langman's house, on the road beleading to Omata, was accidently destroyed by fire.
