25th March, 1865. Copy. My dear Weld, I have very little to report by this Mail. Various rumours of the proceedings of the Pai Mariri are brought in from time to time, but a bold front and the cooperation of the friendly Natives will do much to check the progress of their faith in this district. I have been watching the progress of events before encurring any expence beyond what was absolutely necessary. I should like much to be able to send you the latest news from Poverty Bay and the Wairoa and trust the mail will be in before the Queen leaves - I have had endless calls from Pakehas and Maoris all day so I must ask you to excuse this short epistle.
