Turanganui Dec. 4/68 My dear McLean, This unlucky southwester prevents details. Ngatiporou and Heretaonga men have disagreed and abandoned pursuit. I stay to try and keep a part and send the bulk of the plain men home in a contented frame of mind, then I shall go to Wairoa, if I succeed in arresting Whitmores party Ngatiporou and our handful of Europeans seem to have done well. Every one is full of admiration of their advance on the enemy, who had only left 80 to 100 as a rear guard decamping with their wounded including Kooti.
