Tauranga May 10th, 1870 My dear Mr Clarke I have been in here ever since the 6th I am ashamed to stay any longer tho' I have a good deal to do. I have been hanging on in the hope that you would come. I did so want to see you before I went inland - again - Some one ought to have a look at the road - that the Ngatipikiao are making - they are assisting a great deal of work. If the Ngaiterangi are to be paid there are a lot of charges against them. I dont know who else could make them out but myself. I am paying the Ngatiruanui this time when I get to Kaiteriria- I have got a lot of clothes from - and Jacobsohn. I hope you will be able to let them have their money - and it can be made a refund to Govt. when stopped from their pay - the goods are all very cheap so they ought not to be kept waiting too long - I could come down any time that you send for me. I have in the Estimate for pay put myself down at 7/- per diem as I have still drawn my Interpreter pay - so all together it is nearly Captain's pay - I am in a great hurry so please excuse this scrawl. Please remember me to Mrs. Clarke and believe me Dr. Mr. Clarke Ever faithfully yours B. Mair
