Auckland 9 August 71 My Dear Mr. McLean, I hope to start today in a cutter for Cabbage Bay to settle the Taniwi there, but have a difficulty in catching Paora Toki who is gone gum digging up the Thames. I have sent a messenger for him and written but he has not answered. I am glad you approve of the place. If you could stir them up in the Printing Office at Wellington to get out proof sheets of my Report I should be very much obliged. There is nothing new here. There is a good deal of dissatisfaction here at nothing having been done in public works especially while Otago and other places are putting them in progress, but the direction of it is chiefly I think against Gillies who is looked upon as not being willing to subordinate private feeling for the good of the province. The Coromandel Diggings have been shamefully neglected in the matter of roads and trams. The good claims are all at a stand still comparatively for want of the means of getting stuff to the mills. Would you let me know if you approve of my going to Taranaki as I mentioned. Yours very truly My Dear Mr. McLean Chas. Heaphy The Honble. Donald McLean
