To:- D. McLean Wellington. 8th. June 1869. St. Kilda with 105 Ngatiporous started same time as Sturt, with coal from the Sturt at Wellington Heads and go on to West Coast. Natives say that no good will be done with our allies so long as Whitmore commands and are waiting to hear that you are in charge of Native Affairs. Our allies at the front express total want of confidence in the Government and dangerous consequences may follow if you do not take charge of the War here soon. This is from some information direct from the Front. I go home to-morrow at 10 a.m. (Signed) Rhodes.
