Waiheke, May 11, 1844. Sir, I do myself the honor to inform you that in pursuance of your instructions received by me of the 29 April I proceeded on the 1st Inst. to the Island of Waiheke, where the Native Chiefs pointed out the boundarys of the lands claimed by the Ngarimaru and Patukirikiri tribes tome. I called on the relatives of William Jowett Native Chief (Jowett himself was absent), and informed them that I had been instructed to visit Te Ruinga and the Chiefs of the Ngatipaoa's to assist in adjusting their claims on Waiheke. They informed me that they had no other claim than what came through the Ruinga, stating that at any time he (Te Ruinga) thought fit to waive his claims on the Island they would relinquish theirs. I replied by assuring them that His Excellency would not sanction the sale of any lands they occupied without their approbation. I then proceed. to Ruinga' s residence at Waiheke. While there he decided on meeting the Ngatimuru and Patukirikiri Tribes at his Station on the Thames. Where they held their consultation and it was there decided and unanimously agreed that a portion of the Island of Waiheke remain in possession of the Ngatipaoas another portion to revert to the Ngatimaru's and a third portion of the Island be considered the property of the Patukirikiris. I herewith do myself the honor of enclosing for your information the agreements entered into by the chiefs of each tribe with a definition of their respective boundarys. I beg to inform you that at Potiki a complaint was brought before me by Mm. Fielder Carpenter against the resident natives for detaining a boat built as payment for timbers cut there for said boat I recommended the sum of ten shillings 10/s be paid the natives which recommendation gave mutual satisfaction.
