COPIES OF LETTERS to SIR DONALD McLEAN, K. C. M. G. . Taranaki 14th. March 1850 Sir, It has often occurred to us as singular, that the Government has taken no notice, as yet, of the meritorious conduct of the Putikiwarrenui natives, during the late war there, in maintaining throughout, not only friendly relations, but in lending aid when required. It appears to us that some pecuniary annual trifle to Hori Kingi, the Chief of the tribe, as the representative thereof, would be not only just, but politic; in so far as it might tend to induce others to follow their example. But Hori Kingi has another claim on the Government's favourable consideration, of which you are well aware, viz:- the disinterested aid he afforded you in the recent settling of the Land Question at Wanganui. Hoping you will bring this matter before His Excellency, the Governor-in-Chief, we have the honour to subscribe ourselves, Sir, Your very obedient servants J. Wilson, J.P. M. Campbell J.P. Sam. Popham King, J.P. To:- D. McLean Esq.
