Mokau, 20th Feb. 1846. Dear Sir I am about starting for Kawhia, but one of our natives informing me a messenger might probably be sent off to Huatoki before my return I write to inform you of what I have heard. Last evening a report came that Taonui with a taua of kotahi rau hokowhitu to wh. others might join, intended to visit us or perhaps march on ki runga. They were now at the Paripari. Another report is that they are coming down to the coast for the purpose of settling at Urinui. The Kuri I hear left yesterday for Motukaramu. I shld. not leave home at this time but I want to see the people along the coast and take Mr. Whiteley's letters as well as fetch my own. On acc. of the Kaka's murunga all friendly communicating is cut off for the present. I can get no one to go to Kawhia I enclose a note wh. I wrote when the Kuri came down, but forgot to send by the postman. Thanks for sending us candle mould screws and 4 lbs. loaf, with letter and parcel from Mr. Tod. As I am allowed to visit Mimi I shall be glad to hear from you at that place, I perhaps may be able to forward letters to you from i raro. I have great confidence in Poihipi. Troublesome times these to us, but I rejoice a struggle is going on between truth and error and the latter must fall before the former. With our kind regards I remain Ever yours truly C. H. Schnackenberg.
