Waipukurau, July 9th, 1862. My dear McLean, Herewith you will receive a couple of letters about reserve difficulties with old Hapuku which I am sorry to say I am totally unable to settle. You will have to come and see after them for I must confess the old Savage is beyond me to manage altogether. I hope you won't think that I am shoving work upon you more than necessary - on the contrary I have tried everything in my power to settle the cases without avail. The one about Tarewa is a very serious affair, it was first resurveyed by Brusfield who made a horrid mess of it, then by FitzGerald who did it correctly - in fact made Hiri put in the blocks himself and then surveyed up to them, coming within a mere trifle of Pelichet's work, and now old Hapuku wants to come up nearly to my door. If not got rid of there will be an awful bill from Riddiford for damages, as there also will be at Waipukurau, if that is not settled, from Henry Russell. Of course I cannot act in the Tarewa case so on that ground alone it wd. require your interference. I begin to hope that the Inglis boundary case will be easier to settle than it seemed at first. Confound these Natives, they are getting harder to manage every day. I fear the exceptional laws and complicated machinery won't suit Hawkes Bay, and very much do I think that a certain gallant Col. is "not the right man in the right place". You have seen the Colenso case of course. The Revd. W.C. is the next Supt. of Hawke's Bay. Oh dear! oh dear! I expect you to make this your Headquarters when you next come - the Court House at Waipawa is 1 1/2 mile off and a first rate place for Maori work. Yours sincerely, G. S. Cooper.
