Napier Sept. 27 1869 Sir, Mr. Ormond duly acquainted you by telegram to Nelson of his having been elected your successor as Supt. of the province of Hawkes Bay. Your address was published in the H.B. Herald in accordance with your request to say it gave satisfaction I cannot do so -- all feel they have lost one they cannot hope to replace. Mr. Ferand most particularly spoke in terms of the loss which the Province would experience in your resignation -- and also what we all owed to your able administration whilst you held the office of Supt. and that the Provinces had to thank you for more than many knew of. Mr. Ormonds address was very good I enclose it for your perusal Mr. Rhodes proposed and Mr.Tanner seconded Mr. Ormonds election there was several expressions of I cannot say ill feeling but the result of former castigations to different members by Mr. Ormond was expressed in following -- ''we perceive the advisability of the same person holding the office of Supt. and Agent of the Genl Govt therefore we vote for Mr. Ormond''. Mr. Carlyon was most particularly bitter in his remarks only however on this point. In reality the election was a perfect success and most satisfactory only it seemed that 3 or 4 members could not forgo the opportunity of venting their spleen, in a a very harmless way however. It is determined that there is to be an Executive -- of which Mr. Ormond is very glad. The Boiling Down Co. have been fined £100 -- which they are so far as I can ascertain agreeable to pay trusting it will on recommendation be refunded -- they are to get a licence to kill and on payment of 1/2d leg -- this Iimagine will not bring in much revenue as if the Kaimanawa ranges are a success there will for the present be very little boiling down besides with the price sheep (fat) are fetching at the Thames and in Auckland -- the establishment will be to a certain degree closed -- I might say Flax operations (partially) are at a stand still until the fate of the gold fields have been decided. Mr. Locke deserves great credit for the manner (assisted by Col. McDonnel) in which he conducted the leasing of the ranges and a large block of Country in conjunction with the same in Hawkes Bay.
