Jany 14th, 1868 Sir In continuation of my prior note, I have the honour to inform you - that Mr. Locke has stated that the Poverty Bay District is in a fearful state. The friendly natives are claiming everything - confiscated Land and even the land to be laid out for a Township - they have also composed songs - to the following effect. "What, fools we were to fight for the Pakeha - he now comes to take our Land from us - let us be strong and see to ourselves - and different songs of a like purport. I give your Honor this information as I thought it would be advisable for your Honor to know the state of affairs before you left Wellington. Capt. Read has been taken to Auckland kept in solitary confinement on board the Tariwera all his property confiscated to the Crown. I should tell your Honor the songs mentioned above were composed by the friendly natives. Mr. J. Marshall has suffered a heavy loss he had about 70 to 80 Tons of Hay in a stack just finished when a native set it on fire - so evidence of a little girl 10 years of age goes to prove the native denies the matter - loss to Marshall about £300 - Every one is highly delighted that Sir George Grey is going to remain in the Colony to receive the Prince - and entertain hopes that you will be able to get the Prince to pay Hawkes Bay a visit - a great number of persons went to Wairoa in the Cleopatra - I shall send all lettes by Capt. Kenny so that your Honor will get them at once. I have the honor to be Sir Your most obt. st. Geo. Thos. Fannin I transmit herewith the law paper returned for insufficient postage.
