4 August 1874 Glenorchy My dear Donald You see by the telligram from Kinross the necessity of at once taking stepts to come to some proper understanding with Albert and the Wepukinue [?] natives about the Block No 2 as they told me & Condie that Henrey Russel has been offering them postes and wire to fence it in and put sheep on it. I can assure you the sooner Russel is put a stope to the better. You will have heard the trouble he has been giving in your absence and behind your back and Albert said that he was quite willing to go on to Wellington if you wanted him and I believe if there was a proper party to treat with them just now the matter might be settled without much trouble. It will be a very bad case if he Russel will be allowed to go on this way. I cannot undertand why he cannot be brought up for treason for the way he is inciting the natives against the law of the land and taking advantage of you in your absence. I was very happy to hear of your safe arrival in your place in the House again. I remain in haste Yours forever Archibald John McLean
