19th. July 58. My dear Sir, Matena Ruta's letter was only received here on the 17th. instant, and is now being taken to the various settlements for consideration. W. Kingi told me he should not join and from all I have been enabled to learn the movement is not likely to take effect here. The enclosed from W. Tamati Upi to Mr. Whiteley who kindly handed me the original, shows counteraction which has emanated from Wellington, but owing to bad weather the professed gathering has not yet taken place. All is Quiet here and the natives begin to think the pakanga at an end. Ihaia continues near Mimi but wishes to sell land as hitherto. I wrote to you on the 15th. May last privately about the Mill at Mokau, built by Mr. Pratt, stating that the Contract required that the work should be surveyed and approved by the Inspector of Mills before the last instalment is payable. The Mill is finished and if there is no Inspector of Mills will you kindly advise me what to do. Hoping you are well, Believe me, Faithfully yours, H. Halse. Dr. Wilson has been confined to his bed, but I am glad to say is mending.
