Opotikei 8th. Oct. 1871. Dear Sir, I have long neglected writing to you but as I have been/so much away from my district that I did not care to trouble you with unnecessary correspondence, Knowing Mr. Ormond advised you of field movements. I have many things to tellyou dear Sir which I cannot well write. I find a great deal of jealousy existing on this coast towards those of Napier side. This exists among Europeans and Maoris. I feel very much disheartened at several things said of myself. I am called leader of a band of marauders, and not to be relied upon. If it were not for you dear Sir I should wish to discontinue this work and let others try to do as well. I sincerely wish an end to this harassing about. It is a constant source of regret that Te Kooti escaped me the last time. I deemed his capture certain while surrounding him. I have the honor to be Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, T.W. Porter, Capt./adjt.
