(Private). Protectors Office, Govt. House, August 3/44. Dear McLean, I am very anxious to hear of your safe arrival and the success which attends your Mission I hope you found Mr. Whitely at home and that he has given you a good introduction to the Natives of your district as there will be a mail every fortnight I hope to hear from you both publicly and privately and please to keep me in full possession of all passing events relative to Native affairs and as they will be mixed up more or less with the Settlers affairs it will give me a tolerable knowledge of all that is passing in your District. I have sent you your general instructions but until the return of the Governor I shall not be able to say any thing about the reserves. You will need patience and forbearance towards both Europeans and Natives and it will be your duty to give the one race a better opinion of the other yours is a Missi on of Peace. Yours very sincerely, George Clarke.
