New Zealand Company's Office New Plymouth Sept. 9th. 1847. Sir, I have the honor to acquaint you that I have viewed applications from certain parties in this Settlement desirous of selecting portions of the land included in the Block lately acquired by you under Governor's Grey instructions between the Sugar Loaves and the Waiwakaiho River. Before taking any steps on the part of the New Zealand Company to lay open that land for selection, I am desirous to be informed whether the purchase you made for the Crown has been so far completed as to render perfectly secure the title and possession of any persons who may choose within its limits, pending the final transfer of the Block to the Company: and whether you will on behalf of the Government give your assistance in putting such persons at once upon the land. I understood you in a recent conversation to state that you were prepared to have such lines opened or such part of the interior survey of the Block made as might be required for the proposed selection. I have the honor to be Sir, Your obedient servant F.D. Bell, Resident Agent for N.P.
