Private New Plymouth 16th. Feb. 1857. My dear Sir, A party of Katatore's natives 16 in number visite the Kawau pa on Friday last and returned to their old quarters on the following morning. They met Kirikumara and his people at the Hua on their way to Town when a little tangi mai and tangi atu took place as both parties moved slowly on. Had they encountered each other the slaughter at the Great Redau would have been nothing to it, as it was however native pride was satisfied and so long as we can manage to look serious at such effusions, I think the present opposition will soon cease. When that desirable end is accomplished I shall expect them to devise the best means for absolving each other from the silly compact against selling land to the pakeha. W. Kingi, of Moturoa, died last Saturday and a considerable tangi is now going on there. Captain Campbell and his daughter arrived yesterday evg. on a visit to Dr. and Mrs. Wilson. The "Venture" came in yesterday from Sydney but I have not heard any news. A young native lad was accidentally shot through the leg by another native while cleaning his gun this morning near the Henui. Dr. Wilson is of opinion that the wound is not serious. Faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
