(Signed) Edward L. Green. Secretary to G.G. Agent. Wednesday. 14th. October 1868. My dear Sir, What I feared has come to pass. Karaitiana and his companions have been murdered by Te Kooti. Nauri is missing, with all his people. Te Waru. the same. If you remember, I mentioned in a former letter, that what I feared most was that finding provisions scarce, that the Prisoners would come down to Oriwha, for potatoes. They have done so; and unfortunately met Karaitiana, and have most probably made Te Waru join them,--- that is, if he has been un-willing, which I doubt. We are in a bad position here. Our Friendlies are not courageous. We have a more than doubtful lot; Kurupakuka close to the township; and a mere handful of half-trained men against a fierce and vindicative enemy; who are gaining additions daily to their numbers. I sincerely hope that assistance be sent to us without delay. Otherwise, I fear for the worst. Tuke has written to Whitmore and your- self. I trust, my dear Sir, you will excuse my being so urgent in the matter; but if something is not done at once by the Government, the result will be fearful to contemplate. Above all things, send provisions. We have scarcely any. I have only three boxes biscuits, and four large bags of flour, left of Government stores. We shall also require more ammunition; but Tuke will tell you all about that part. Yours very truly, (Signed) S. Deighton.
