Wellington 24th. Feby, 1866. Dear Maclean, Capt, Thomas is deained for the adjustment of his accounts. I have therefore asked Campbell as he is a Resd. Magistrate to earry out the preliminary arrangements for the transfer of the Prisoners to the Chatham Islands under your instructions. Capt. Thomas will go up by the next Mail and will goin the St. Kilda at Napier on about the 5th. March by which time you can probable have her at Napier with the Prisoners on board ready to start. Campbell if he pleases may accompany them to the Shatham Islands and return in the St. Kilda for the next batch and accompany them down also and so continue on pay until the whole are located there. I have thought of everything I could in the midst of our immense pressure of other business. If I have omitted anything please to point it out. I enclose copies of all papers so that you may know as much as I do myself. We have had great complications at Taranaki and Wanganui - the Governor goes to the former place today. The Troops do not distinguish betwixt friendly and unfriendly Natives and you can fancy the results - however I hope the Governor who alone can issue orders to the Troops will be able to put things square. In the Memo I sent you from Domett I had forgotten that it was Wilson and not you who gave it to me. Excuse the blunders. Yours very truly, A.H. Russell,
