Waitoro Oct. 8 1871. Dear Sir, I dont think I shall be doing wrong in telling you that very particular enquiries are being respecting the stoppage of the survey by the natives. I have seen four or five telegrams from the "Post" asking for minute particulars and stating that the Government were doing all they could to bush the matter up but that the opposition would not allow this and were going to make a strong point of it. I mention this so that you may be on your guard but please do not let it appear in the papers as the telegrams were shewn to me to a certain extent confidentially. At the last meeting of the natives one and all decided to remove the Surveyors on Wednesday in case of a favourable answer not received by Tuesdays mail. Rauhiki of Kakarika sent a party to attend the meeting but the Ngatiraukawa plainly told them that they did not agree with the stoppage of the Railway Survey as they consider it ought to go on and Rauhine take his chance of receiving compensation, the same as an European. While on this subject I may mention that a strong feeling of dissapointment and disgust was felt throughout the Rangitikei District upon reading Mr. Gisborne's speech. I enclose an article from the Herald in which your name is mentioned. I shall go over to Rangitikei on Tuesday and if I have time to Oroua to see what is going on there. I am dear Sir, Yours faithfully, H.M. Brewer. The Hon. Wm. Fox.
