Opotiki 7th. Feby. 1871. Dear Sir, We experienced very rough marching through from Poverty. From enquiry I think Te Kooti must be at Waikare iti. Ngatiporou are looking forward eagerly to hostilities with Waikato. It seems they have some feudal hatred against the Waikatos. They are constantly talking of what they would do if Govt. allowed them to go to Waikato. If required you could rely upon the whole district going. Today I start by Ohiwa to rejoin Ropata at Waimana and march to Ruatahuna by Ruatoki. I have the honor to be Dear Sir, Yours faithfully, T.W. Porter.
