Turanganui November 10th. 1868 8 a.m. Dear Sir, I am sorry to say the Hau Haus have surprised Matawhero, and killed Capt. Biggs, Mr. Wilson - and I am unable to say how many others. They attacked the place between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning. We have a few of M. Potae's men; and there will soon be a number from the coast; but as poor Biggs is gone, there is no one to take command. Women and children are coming in here, as they can, but we do not know yet who is killed, and who is safe. A messenger has just gone to bring the ''Tawera'' back from Tolaga Bay. Till she comes, we can only have communication with you by land. I will write again by the next opportunity. I remain Yours truly (Signed) W.I. Williams To:- D. McLean Esq.
