Private. I am just informed John McLeod has written the Canadian at Okaihau that he will possibly vote against the Government. S. V. S. Hokianga 18 July 1872 Dear Sir, I just write a line to inform you that there is a strong feeling amongst the natives in this District with reference to the small pox, and a desire on their part to be vaccinated, I think a good article in the "Waka Maori" on the subject would do good - I am sorry to see that Mr.Rowse of this place has been blaming Colonel Russell for not visiting Waima on the occasion of his trip in the north, but I consider he was quite right not to do so, as in my presence Hone Mohi Tawhai and Raniera Wharerau both of Waima requested him not to meet them at Waima, as but few natives were in the settlement, and that they desired to see how the Waitapu School succeeded before making any move in the matter, at the same time they got Colonel Russell to give them all the information possible on the subject, which Hone Mohi Tawhai took down in writing - I have been very busy lately at the various settlements settling small disputes, and I am happy to say that the people are as usual, in a quiet peaceful state and if possible becoming more and more amenable to law, and better subjects - The only evil is the drink and I am sorry to say that the Auckland Distilled Spirits has this week found its way here, in Mr.Dargavilles Schooner the "Tauranga" I will keep as sharp a look out as possible, but it is difficult to get an information laid, especially after the fate of the "Offord Case" - I have just heard of a case of manslaughter at Wangaroa, a native by a half caste whilst gambling, Mr.Williams is investigating the matter and has doubtless written you officially on the subject. Please excuse this hasty note as the mail is just closing and trusting you are well I am, Sir Yours very Faithfully Spencer von Sturmer
