Taupo, Feb. 26th, 1869. Sir, As there is an opportunity of sending to Napier tomorrow, I have the honor to send the following report. Ihaia TeWaru who was reported to have been killed by Te Kooti has returned from the Urewera country - he reports that he has seen both Te Kooti and Nikora since the fight at Ngatapa - Te Kooti was not wounded and says that he lost very few men. Ihaia also reports that Te Kooti has returned to Ngatapa. From what I hear I do not think it likely that the Urewera as a tribe will join Te Kooti at present. I have not yet seen Ihaia or otherwise I have no doubt that I should be able to give you more information as to the movements of both Te Kooti and the Urewera. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obed. Servant, Jno. St. George. His Honor Donald McLean, S. S. Agent, etc. Hawkes Bay. I have told the boy who takes this trash to see you bring any answer - he will return in two days after delivering this to you.
