Colonial Defence Office Wellington Jan. 16th. 1869 Sir, I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated Jan. 4th. inst. enclosing letter from Lt. Col. Lambert, with enclosures relative to the appointment of Mr. Burton at Wairoa, and calling my attention to the tone of such letter. Lt. Col. Lambert has been informed (copy of letter enclosed) that he was mistaken in the view he took, of the matter; but there was nothing wither discourteous to himself, or injurious to the Public Service in your applying as General Govt.
