Tauranga Feby 18th. 1870. 5 1/2 P.M. My dear Mr. McLean, I just write you a line to give you the latest news. Gundy arrived from Whakatane I have told him for what service he is required. He will start to prospect the road through the forest on Monday. I have disbanded the Ngaiterangi for two weeks to take up their crops, then they are to set to work about the road this will give Gundy time to fix upon the best line. This arrangement will relieve our Defence of 70 men - for of course I will knock all those off who are on half pay as well. A great number of the scattered hauhaus are coming in and will be compelled to remain out by the sea side with all other decent Ngaiterangi. I have not heard from McDonnell the last day or two - Major Mair is back again for which I am glad. I have not been out of the house since my return from Maketu - the fall I got gave me a tremendous shaking. The "Challenger" has arrived here, and I think the Commodore will remain a few days. The "Tauranga" just in - I have your letters. Our opinions you will find with regard to McDonnell and Hay being together will quite coincide. If you do not raise any objection I will take a run up to Auckland by next opportunity. I feel sorry that Rapata has not left as I have been putting great faith on that part of the Expedition. However you know best. I am anxious to get this road work on, but I do not think the Thames Volunteers are very keen. Very faithfully yours, Hy. T. Clarke.
