Poraite Xmas day 1864 My dear McLean, I think you are quite right and though I can do nothing directly you know I am on your side to the backbone. I have canvassed my side with thorough success and should have been at Petane today had I not learned from you that Wilson was going there. I wrote however to Richardson and Anderson (Carters partner) took it over yesterday and he promised to canvass for you I meant however to have been there today myself. Go in for the Council. It is quite easy to resign your seat if you afterwards dislike to be in it as Superintendent. If such a day should come I will gladly come forward to succeed you and support you. But I am inclined to think it is quite unnecessary for you to be out of the Council and that you can do good service in that Assembly. As to Carter I do not think he has any chance and should be sorry if he had, when his success would conflict with our opportunity of having so good a man as yourself. I shall be in tomorrow (Friday), and shall see you of course. I spoke to 16 electors who all will support you. I went to Lowry's but had my ride for my pains as I find he is not an elector. I wish you test luck and am yours very truly G. S. Whitmore Merry Xmas to you I send you a rough notion of my land (5%-) views - or rather I will give it you tomorrow. G. S. W.
