Kaipara 18th. July 1871. My dear Sir, I received you last letter the moment before I left for the Wairoa. Mrs. Farr is very much better which you know is a great relief to me. I have almost cut Mr. Albert. Hare will have to settle with you about the horse. J. Sheehan is employed by McLeod to collect his debts. McL. is under an impression that I will advise the natives not to pay him. He attributes to me what he would do himself. The Natives deny as a tribe owing anything, Otene is in his debt and the people wont pay, he will have to do that himself. He wants to pay something with their land to which they object. Three Natives bound to Hokianga had passages with me to Mangawhare. One returned from a visit to Taranaki, he says the Land Court is to be stopped and the people of the North will get up a papuri whenua, if it is. He informed me that there is a man in Taranaki named Whiti who is going to bring evil on the land again with a new form of prayer, Pai Marire hau, a monster meeting is to take place in Septr. next when the New light (darkness) will be proclaimed. In fact this Whiti is Horopapera No.2. The whole district is promised to be got back in two years to the followers of the new faith. I suppose this is no news to you as Parris is on the spot. I do not like to make an official report of this lest I should be ridiculed. However you will understand my motive, great events have even in N. Z. arisen from insignificant matters similar to the above. I am going to Auckland tomorrow if possible and may send you a line from them. I am about to send you a copy of my report. If you have time to read it send it back again as you will see it again officially. I also send you a copy of a corr. with the super. I have been in great good humour since I knew about the new purchase. You will now have the finest property in N. Z. I observe you have seen young Gannon. I apprehend the difficulty of doing anything for him. I wish he was out of that. Yours faithfully, J. Rogan.
