December 1868 No. 697/3 Sir, It having been reported to the Government that on a notice being issued that Volunteers were required for service at the Front, the Hawke's Bay Yeomanry Cavalry under the command of Captain Tanner at once offered their services, and proceeded to Poverty Bay, I have the honor to request that you will convey to Captain Tanner and to the Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and men of the Troop, the thanks of the Government for their zeal and patriotism in so readily responding to the call for aid on behalf of their fellow colonists, thereby setting an example not only to their brother Volunteers in Napier, but to the whole of the Militia and Volunteer Forces throughout the Colony.
