Protector's Office, Auckland. February 7th. 1846. Sir, I have the honor to acquaint you that it is the intention of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor to remodel the Protectorate Department and in consequence it has become my painful duty to inform you that on and after the 31st. of March 1846 the services of two officers only will be required. The following extract from the Honorable the Colonial Secretary's Letter, while it dispenses with your present services, assures you that His Excellency will bear in mind your claims upon the Government. ''Should any opportunities offer of making appointments to Native Schools or Institutions, the claims of those gentlemen who have been employed in the Protectorate Department shall receive every consideration they may be found to merit.'' I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, George Clarke. Chief Protector of Aborigines.
