Letter from Thomas Godfrey to Donald McLean Esq. dated 14th. July 1857. Auckland 14th. July 1857. My dear Sir, I have not been able to get Mr. Richmond to complete his inspection of the old accounts, but he assures me that he has given them as much of his time as he can spare, and that he will cause no unnecessary delay. I have furnished the whole of the Vouchers required for the accounts, so there will be no hindrance on our part. The last Voucher, Hoaker's receipt for One hundred pounds, Mr. Carkeek has forwarded to this office, and I forwarded to the Audit. So that is the last receipt required to substantiate your accounts. But there is a receipt for £100 which you paid to the Taranaki natives for the Hua Block in 1853, that I have not got, nor have you charged it against the Government in your accounts, although they have charged you for the receipt of the money. I found a pencil mark of Mr. Cooper's on a paper, that the reason you had not charged the Government with the payment, was that it was not charged against you. If you see Mr. Cooper, will you speak to him about it in the £1980 memo of Major Richmond; and you require the Credit Voucher. I wrote to Mr. Daniels about it, but he cannot find any memorandum in their office of such a payment. I hope you will be successful in getting in the monies that are out on loans in the South; for the Ministers don't seem inclined to take any responsibility on themselves about them; and I am afraid your only remedy is to recover all you can, or to get them settled by Land Purchases. Mr. W.S. Grahame called about te Hapuku's vessel. He advises she should be sold by auction at once; for she is getting no good, and is an expense. Will you write about her? I suppose Government was to take her off te Hapuku's hands for his debt, and make what they could of her. Would such a thing do? It's so late and dark that I can't write any more. With my kindest respects, Yours truly (Signed) Thomas Godfrey To:- Donald McLean Esq.
