Part Waikato. August 7th. 1872. My dear Sir, I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your very kind and very flattering letter of the 15th. ultimo; which I only received yesterday. In yours you state you have not received "the paper from the Waikato, or the Genealogical tree." The latter I forwarded from the Native Office in Auckland, having made up the package and addressed it to you yourself; so I cannot-account for the miscarriage. I sincerely trust it will not be lost. The Reminiscences of Waikato are still in hand. I am endeavouring to extend it a little beyond the first indention, but notwithstanding personal experience, I perceive from the reports that Rewi and the Maniopoto have seceded from Matutaera and his party. It will, I have no doubt, create an amount of complication and anxiety; but in the end will prove beneficial. "A house divided in itself can never stand." It has been a revulsion of something of this kind that I have been looking forward to produce a diversion in their movements; it will open a field for diplomacy. Mrs. Marshall has directed me to say that if on your return to the Auckland Province, you could manage to come to Port Waikato, she would be only too happy to receive you as the friend of her husband, from whom he has received so many kindnesses. I remain, my dear Sir, Yours very sincerely, (Signed) C. Marshall. P.S. The natives in this neighbourhood are very solicitous about vaccination. They are in a state of excitement in fear of smallpox. I have written to the Civil Commissioner respecting it. I hope something will be done, as it will be "God help us" if it once gets amongst the natives. To:- The Hon. D. McLean. Wellington.
