Turanganui February 9th. 1869. Sir, I have the honor to state that from information gleaned from some of the Hau Haus, that Te Kooti had fallen back on Walooeka. He has already been joined by eight of the Whakatohea, and is only waiting the consent of the remainder of their Tribe, when he intends attacking Opotiki. He assorts that he has obtained a plan of the place; that the Magazine is some distance from the Redoubt; and that the settlers are so few and seattered that he will have no difficulty in attaining his object. It is also said that he has sent a man of the name of Manihera, te Opetiki, to purchase clothing, provisions, and run. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient servant (Signed) W.S.
