14th Augt. 1867 Dear Mr. McLean I received your note of the 2nd Inst. and hope you received the return of arms and the other papers I sent by the Mail of the 1st. I left Napier for Waipukurau before the arrival of the Steamer and did not get home till the 7th I was detained at Tamumu Sidney Johnsons Run for four days by the late flood I have not seen George he promised to call as soon as he returned from Taupo. I hear he has returned and reported the result of his trip to Mr. Rhodes who I dare say will write to you. I have seen some of the Gold prospectors who have returned in consequence of the Hau Haus looking rather fierce they are the men who Whitmore sent. One an old Australian digger says that he is so sure that gold will be found in paying quantities where he has been, that he would not go to the Auckland field if the report from there was ten times as encouraging. They have started again and intend going by your Run to try and reach their destination without being seen by Hau Hau's- I have sent you all the requisitions for Stationery except Coopers and I have told him to send it direct as I could not delay any longer - I hope Mrs. Hart and Miss McLean are quite well please remember me to them - I stayed a night on my way home at the accommodation House at Maraekakaho, and was made very comfortable; old Archy McLean was very kind and attentive to me. I remain Yours faithfully Edward L. Green
