Eden Terrace, Auckland 25th March 1871 Dear Sir, I have just seen Lawyer Sheehan, who has for some time back been acting for the Kaipara Natives, and who has considerable influence with them. I told him that you wished to see him relative to the Sums due me by those natives, - upon which he proposed taking the matter in hand, and calling upon you as soon as you would return from the Thames. I have arranged to hand Sheehan a statement of the principle sums due me and if the two chiefs and are asked to come to Town by the proper authorities - and with the assurance that they would not be sued while here, I make no doubt but they would come and arrange. It is not ncessary that Sheehan should see the statement I sent in to you a few days ago - and indeed I believe the facts stated in it, are so plain, that both Sheehan and Rogan, might take offence if seen by them, in which case I might suffer. In other respects I believe a word from you to Sheehan, would put matters right for me, and God knows I would not trouble you as I am doing if I had not so much to distress me, but as regards this matter my cause is a just one. Yours Very Truly John McLeod P. S. I am to leave for the Bay tomorrow morning but I hope Mr. Whitaker will help to arrange matters here for me. J.M.L.
