> Found Private Stewart in liquor at his lodgings at 12 o'clock p.m. he having been appointed to come on duty at 11 p.m. Same found very drunk at his lodgings at about 9 p.m., and was reported to Mr. Leach, J.P. at 11 p.m. Went a second time, taking Mr. Medland with me. Found the back door bolted inside, and failed in the attempt to get him out. At past 11 sent Heale to call, and warn him of his duty. At about 20 minutes to 12 p.m. went a third time with Mr. Medland, and Privates Heale and Hakopa. After repeated loud calling and knocking, he rose to his feet, and almost immediately stumbled; after which he appeared with a firs stick, whic he brandished about, apparently in search of something, and then lighted the remains of a candle, and opened the door. I went in, and found Alexander Campbell, standing up in Stewart's bed-room. Asked if he intended sleeping there, he replied "No", and left the premises. There was smoke in the room, caused by the fire stick. I again went into the room, looked about with a dark lantern, and finally left the premises apparently in darkness. All went to Town. Mr. Medland, Hakopa and I remained with Stewart, until he appeared perfectly sober, and then left him a little before 1 a.m. (Signed) H. Halse. Sergt. To:- D. McLean Esq. J.P. Inspector of Police.
