My dear McLean, I have been wondering lately when we shall meet again, and have come to the conelusion that the chances for the present are gradually decreasing. We landed 66 men and 8 officers this day week at Drury under the command of yr. humble servant, who however was taken ill next day, and had to come on board again. They marched to the Front on Tuesday to join Capt. Sullivan and 25 men and Mr. Falcon (who have been there some time) taking or rather escorting two large Flat Boats that have been built in Auckland for the Waikato, "Eclipse" has been waiting for the last 4 days to get outside to convey the "Avon" to the entrance of the Waikato, when she is return, fill up with coal and steam to Sydney with all dispatch to request that all the reinforcements Australia and Tasmania can give may be sent at once. She will then join us here, and land all her available Force (40 or50). We heard this afternoon that Two more settlers had been murdered near Drury, and that the General (who happened to be there) set off with a Party to see what cd. be done in the matter. He is a great favourite with the troops, and as yet has been very successful; in the attack on Tuesday up the Waikato, the Maoris admit 42 killed. But of course you know all the particulars much better than I can tell you. If you have a spare moment, will you give me a line and tell me what you think of the state of affairs and of the General Prospects of N. Zealand. I presume you get the Auckland Papers if not I will send them. If my box of Clubs are not gone I will get them sent from Auckland straight to London. If you come across any Maori curiosities will you keep some for me. Have you seen Mr. and Mrs. Campbell lately I hope they are quite well. Please give them my kind regards - also Cooper, and Major Douglas our new Commodore ought to be out by the beginning of Sept., Hotham is coming out in the Flag Ship. I had a long letter from MacGregor last mail, He is taking it easy at home. I hope to be able to land next week for good as something stirring is expected. No time for more.
