Letter from F.G. Steward to Donald McLean Esq. dated May 17th. (no year date) My dear McLean, The bearer of this is taking back Cook's grey horse, and the animal Norman rode. I have given him one pound, and taken his receipt, so you will give him whatever more is necessary. The man leading the pack-horse knocked up yesterday at Pahatanui. I will therefore pay the man who came on from there, and per--haps you will see and settle with the other. I have paid nothing for the hire of any of the horses we got on the road, but will settle for all we got at Wellington. We had a very prosperous Journey down, and arrived last night. No regular English mail, but news that Lord Derby is out, and Lord Palmerston in. Yours very truly, (Signed) F.G. Steward Wellington May 17th. (no year date.)
