Mokau 24th Feb. 1846 Dear Sir Yours to myself and Waitara have just come to hand and as Waitara is now going back to Mimi I hope he will get this conveyed to you. I was sent for to the Kani our old kainga, where I read W's letter, nearly all the people and Kuri too being present. He was evidently a little anoyed tho' he did not say much. The natives have a letter in wh. I wrote you about Taonui's taua. The Kuri has just told me that he is going up to morrow, and that he shld. keep Taonui ma back until our people call upon them to come to the ''huihui''. But they may meet him in the river as they are expected by some of our natives to have left Motukaramu this morning. I am glad indeed that we can still communicate tho' the ''Tapu'' I am affraid will not be taken off. Many thanks for all your kindnesses. If you can get the saw handle conveyed to Mimi I can fetch it from there I believe, tho' I do nothing but what I can do openly. I have no fear but that I shall be able to keep W. and the greater part of our people on my side notwithstanding te riri of angry Kuri. He is however friendly towards me and it is my wisdom to keep him so if possible. Mr. Riemenschneider writes, that he has not written to you for fear of being suspected to make you ''pakeke''. There was a long talk about your having said the Kuri was ''he manotangata'' but at last it was brought to ''tangata tangata noa iho''. When I told him, you had not written him because his letter to you was ''hopukapuka riri'' he said ''kau hua kite koe''. Please to forward the inclosed to Mr. King, and let me know what you think the tawa. I shall not fail to inform you of all Ts. moves that is if I can. With Mrs. S. kind regards, I remain, My dear Sir Ever yours truly C. H. Schnackenberg.
