Protectors Office, Auckland June 26, 1845. Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your private official letter dated 14th. May, informing me of the fears entertained by the Wanganui settlers, and your projected journey in consequence. In the present instance, I am of opinion that you adopted the most prudent course, but as a general principle I would advise you that "Wanganui" is included in the Southern Division of the Island under the Superintendence of Major Richmond, to whom, all matters connected with that settlement should be referred. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, George Clarke. Chief Protector of Aborigines.
