The poll closed at 6 p.m., and three-quarters of an hour afterwards tbe result waa posted outside the Council Chambera as follows : — Eden George 403 1 William Thomson 390 John Tippett Smith ... 329 i There were five informal voteß, making the total number polled 1127, or 21 less than were recorded at the Mayoral election last year, when 1148 votes were divided between the tyro candidates. A crowd of some few hundreds of people was gathered outside the Council Chambers when the result was posted up, but the candidates were not present. Mr George, however, drove up immediately afterwards and addressed the crowd from the box of his .cab. He was under--1 stood to Bay that he thanked the ; ratepayers very heartily for having re- \ turned him, and that he especially thanked | his supporters, of the Labour party. He ■ would make it his study to uphold the dignity of his office. He considered that ' the work of the Council needed a thorough ' r reorganisation, and he would be prepared '< with a scheme for that purpose, but he ( would need a few monthß in order to per--1 . feet it before bringing it under the notice lof the ratepayers. He thought that at the 1 ; end of his year of office his record would be ' I satisfactory, and if it were not he would be ' i willing to retire from municipal life. LTTTELTON.
