As the question has been asked, "Who are the chief advisers and administrators in the War Office of Her Majesty's Government?" the following particulars of the Secretary of State: for War and other officers —the dates of birth and amount of salary received by each, will enlighten any of our readers who feel interested: The Marquis of Lansdowne, K.G. (born 1845, receiving £5000 a year), is the present Secretary of State for War. He was Under-Secretary for War, 1872 to 1874. He has seen no military service. In 1895, when the Consevative Government came into power, he succeeded Mr. Campbell-Bannerman, who was Financial Secretary to the War Office 1871 to 1874, 1880 to 1882, and Secretary of State for War 1890 to 1895.. Lord Lansdowne exercises supreme administrativejiontrol of the army, and is advised by the Command-er-in-Chief (Lord Wolseley) on all important matters of military policy. Mr. G. Wyndham, M.P. for Dover (born 1853, £1500), is the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for War. He was appointed in 1898, succeeding Mr. St. John Broderick and Lord Monkswell. iie was lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards, and served in the Soudan in 1895. Mr. Powell Williams, M.P. for vSouth Birmingham (born 1840, £1500), is the Financial Secretary. He was appointed in 1895, succeeding Mr. Woodall. He advises the Secretary of State on all questions of army expenditure. The Permanent Under-Secre-tnrv is Sir Ralph Knox, K.C.B.- (bora 1836, £2000). He hasTmly filled hie present office since 1897 (when he succeeded Pr A. Halliburton, X.C.8.), though he has been in several other departments of the War Office since 1856. Mr. D. G. A. Fleetwood Wilson (£1200) is Assistant Under-Secre-tary; he was recently Director of Clothing. Lord Wolseley, K.P. (born 1833, £4500), is Commander-in-Chief : succeeding the Duke of Cambridge, who was then 76 years of age in 1895: He exercises general command of the whole army, advises the Secretary of State, superintends the mobilisation and the offensive and defensive operations of all regular and irregular forces, makes appointments and issues army orders. Major-Gene-ral Sir Coleridge Grove, K.C.B. (born 1839 £1500), is Military Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, and has occupied the post since 1885. He has served in Egypt and the Soudan. Lieutenant-Colonel Lake assists him in the mobilisation of the forces. Major-General Sir J. C. Ardagh, KCIE. (born 1840, £15001 has been the Director-General of Military Intelligence at headquarters since 1896 He was private secretary to iord Lansdowne from 1888 to 1894. has served on several commissions and has been in several battles m Egypt and the Soudan.
