GENERAL WOODGATE'S SUCCESSOR,
General Arthur Singleton Wynne, O.B V the newly appointed successor o the late General Woodgate, is, for lia age., the handsomest man in the kitish army. Born fifty-three years go, lie entered the army in 1863, and iis career had been of the usual order, ■, bright one without any especially :onspicuous chapter. In 1877 he erved as Superintendent of Army Signalling in the lowaki Campaign, 'or which he was mentioned in deslatohoa and promoted. Then in the .Vfghan war he had charge of the field ejegraphs with the Karum Valley .''ield Force, and was present at the
capture of Peiwar Ivotal and in other affairs of less importance. Regimentally, he is a Yorkshire Light Infantry officer, and before going to Aldershot was at Malta on the Staff. At Alder.ihot he showed such talent, in the opinion of the Duke of Conn aught md Sir Kedvers Buller, that he was retained to complete the field column work, which ended recently. His position before he was selected to succeed the ill-fated General Woodgate was Deputy Adjutant. General of the Field Force in South Africa, when his rank was Colonel. Shortly after his appointment he was wounded in one of the minor engagements, but soon recovered,
