THE FELL MEMORIAL.

£ DEPUTATION TO THE CITY

COUNCIL.

(Prom "The Colonisfc" March M&t.)

A deputation of citizens consisting of Messrs C. J. Harley, .H. Bkigent, and <H.. R.Dnnoan waited .upon the City Council last evening in .connection with the proposed erection of a memorial to ..the-late Mr C. Y. Fell.-

Mr Harley said the deputation represented a strong committee, which had been set up to establish a memorial to the:late Mr C. Y. Fell. The committee had agreed that the most suitable memorial would be a drinking fountain in the City Council Reserve at Tahunaf or the; benefit of pleasure seekers. There was no water for the public at Tahuna, and it was felt that a'^lririking fountain would be a great boon to :£he people. To enable the water .to be supplied to the fountain, it was necessary to get the permission of the Council to extend the present rwater service. It ma& not intended to provide a water -supply for Tahuna .and the committee did not think it would-be fair to allow those >w<ho lived outside the town boundary to have .the benefit (Of the city water service. The late Mr Fell was one of the foremost citizens of Nelson for many years, and was Mayor of the city for javejveais. it would be ; a graceful act on the part of the city to erect in a public place a fitting ,memorial to one who had been suqh a respected citizen. As .a graceful act, the Council was also asked to give generous assistance by extending the service. . -

Mr Baigeht, in supporting the request said that the extension of the water to the City-Council Reserve would* Ibe a great convenience to citizens who were now dependent upon residents of Tahuna for water for jpicnieking purposes. Mr Duncan also supported the request. If the Council acceded to the wishes of the committee lie was sure it would have the^ endorsement of citizens. : «. _The deputation then withdrew, the Mayor intimating that the decision of the Council -would be communicated to the committee.

Cr. Gibbons (expressed his sympathy with the proposal, and suggested that the 3-in. main which ended at Richardson street sho<uM be extended to Taiaittna. ' ,

■Cr. Carlisle, wMle recognising the necessity of supplying water for picnickers at lahunaj said *c. failed to see how the Council could. saadertake to supply laihuna with'water -wfren they could not supply their .own residents with a proper supply. - ■ . The Mayor said tha? (during the summer wdter lor Tahuna 'had been taken from -the trough at ike cliffs. .It was stated, that £2 a dayAvas being' made I he matter was refei^iied to the commiifctee.. . ■• v ■■-.' ' - :
