EARTHQUAKE IN SAMOAN CROUP
DESTRUCTIVE TIDAL WAVE

Particulars regarding the earthquake and tidal wave in tho Sainoan Group on June 25th show that there were alarming tremors extending for a period of two minutes. Buildings were violently shaken. Tho Customhouse, a concrete building, was considerably damaged Residences and stores suffered, but to a less extent. Many sxi'bsidences occurred. One near tho principal stores- at Apia was about 30ft squnre.
The earthqunko reached its maximum in the. mountains. interior the grotihd was agitated , like the waves of thfroceari; ,Acres,brtree's were tiprooted, and Jrriasse^of rock 'were burled down'.thoVnimintaih- sides \ ■ '-':<■
The quake -was- followed bj' a tidal wave, tlie full force of which "was experienced on the side opposite to Apia. It was severely felt at. Lolofaga. Sayaii, and Paao; Pago. The tide was dead low, but tho sea swept over tho beach
into adjacent native houses, carrying everything berore it. The inhabitants fed terror-stricken to the hills.
The Mormon Church at Pago Pago was demolished. The viwc was almost spent on reachfng Haanai.
It caused the loss of several cutters and Hooded shops and dwellings.
