In 1863 Mr Paul, an* engineer from America, and I held a twelfth share each m a small boat, which we used to anchor about 20ft out in the river when it was low. We hacl a specially-constructed bucket, something like a large scoop, which we used todrag-betweeri the boat and the shore with a windless and rope, ,and as a result*.of- IAVELYE DAYS Wn AVON 36 OUNCES OF GOLD. Mr Paul also built a cradle, rocked by water power, and worked about six acres to a depth of one foot on surface of beach, making a good.rise, . on which he returned tc America. • In 1873 I built a little spoon dredge, worked by hand, and got as*, much as SIX OUNCES A DAY on patches we could work to advantage in the winter time when river was low. After six months I sold out and left the district,- I sank holes on the flat, but could not bottom for water. I am satisfied that with a large and powerful dredge you have a splendid property.
