FIRE BRIGADE.

A meeting of this brigade was held at the Masonic Hotel on the evening of Tuesday last, for the purpose of electing a Captain in lieu of Mr. J. C. Bartlett, who was unfortunately killed a few weeks since by an accident upon the beach road. It was proposed by Mr. R. Aitken, and seconded by Mr. W. Good— "That Mr. Edward Everett be Captain of the Brigade." Adopted unanimously. Proposed by Mr. Pebct, and seconded by Mr. Phillips— "That Mr. Thomas Snow be Corpo- j ral, vice Everett, promoted." The following resolutions were also adopted :—: — 11 That the present ladders and hooks being insufficient, means be taken to provide others, lighter and more suitable." " That the Board of Works be requested to cause the mill-stream to flow into the Trafalgar-street ditch every evening." On Wednesday afternoon the fire-engine was tried by the brigade, and, unlike former attempts, this one succeeded admirably, the water being thrown in a continuous jet for some considerable distance. But one cause of complaint existed, and that was with reference to the often mentioned stream which should run through the Trafalgar-street ditch. On this occasion we believe the engine wasdelayed half an hour before the water flowed in sufficient quantity to work it ; no inconsiderable time, should a serious fire occur in any thickly populated quarter.

Chamber of Commerce.— A special general meeting of the members of the Chamber of Commerce is called for Wednesday next, the 16th instant, for the purpose of considering a letter from the Colonial Secretary with reference to the introduction of insolvency laws into the colony. We hope that the members will give expression to the very Btrong feeling existing in our city in favour of the immediate adoption of such a measure.

Dnmsii to Mb. A. Satjndebs.— A dinner was given to Mr. Alfred Saunders, under the auspices of *' the memorial committee," at the Masonic Hotel, on Wednesday evening last, at whioh thirty-five gentlemen were present. Mr. Parker M.P.C., was to have presided, but in his absence Mr. H. J. Goodman occupied the chair. After the cloth was cleared, Mr. Saunders referred to his late trial, and succeeding speakers, among other topics, made some suggestions upon the duty of the press. The dinner was placed upon the table in Mr. Everett's usual excellent style. Accident.-— On Wednesday last, an accident occurred through that very common habit of leaving horses in the street unattended. It appears that a flour wagon drawn by two horses, and belonging to Mr. Alfred Saunders, had been left outside the store of Messrs. Symons and Co., and that from some cause the horses, galloped up Bridge-street, coming in contact with a light cart belonging to Messrs. Hooper and Co., in which were two lads. One wheel and the shaft of the cart were carried away, and the two boys thrown out, one of whom fell beneath the horses, and yet fortunately escaped unhurt. Revision of the Elecioeai Roix. — We see that W. T. L. Travers, Esq., the revising officer, has given public notice of his intention to hold courts for the revision of the Electoral roll of Motueka and Massacre Bay, at the Motueka Institute, on Monday the 4th of June ; of the City of Nelson, at the Courthouse, on the 18th June ; and of the Waimea districts, at the Richmond Institute, on the 31st June. The court for the Motueka and Massacre Bay district will, after the revision of the Motueka section, be adjourned to the 7th June at the school-house Motupipi, and from thence, until the 9th June, at the Courthouse, Collingwood. Nelson Maiikit.— We understand that a tender has been accepted by the Board of Works for the erection of a market place, and that the work will be commenced forthwith. The site fixed upon is the fish market reserve adjoining the salt-water culvert.
